Chiaki’s Profile

I’ve been based in New York for 20 years during which I’ve produced documentaries for the UN, television news and sports programs, and other types of video media. I have also worked under the auspices of Japan’s Official Development Assistance as a volunteer video production instructor in Indonesia, and used experience and knowledge accumulated through extensive international travel to produce and consult on events with cultural and daily-life themes.

Brief Background:

I left my family in Japan to Southern California in 1977. I attended high school there and later earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biomedical engineering from University of Bridgeport in Connecticut. I had planned, and started on, a master’s program in physics, but changed directions when I unexpectedly received a scholarship to study cinema and video production in the University of Bridgeport’s Fine Arts Department.

After completing the video production program, I worked for two years as a director for the news department of Fuji Television’s New York bureau before becoming freelance. My video production experience now includes coverage of Presidential elections and other news; Olympic, professional baseball, and other sporting events; live relays of events for broadcast in Japan, and the production of UN documentaries.

In October 2002, I embarked on a two-year stint as a volunteer TV program production instructor at Indonesia’s national Multi Media Training Center. My work in that capacity was part of the Japanese Foreign Ministry’s Official Development Assistance to Indonesia. Yomiuri Shimbun, a major national newspaper in Japan, carried a story on my participation in this assistance program.

In addition to video production, I’m also now putting my years of international experience to work in pursuits like consulting for events introducing Japanese food culture to overseas audiences, and planning tours in which participants use periods of living in New York to learn more about themselves.
